Hip hop dance evolved from hip hop culture beginning in early 1960s New York as breakdance, and taking on new forms throughout the 80s and 90s. These new styles known as ‘new school’ are mostly danced upright in contrast to the many ground moves of breakdance. Hip hop continues to evolve today and is heavily influenced by pop culture. Level 1-9 hip hop students perform in both our December and June performances.
Breakin’ (more commonly known as Breakdancing) is a style of street dance that originated among Black and Puerto Rican youths trying to find a creative outlet and avoid gang conflict in New York City during the early 1970s. The dance, alongside Hip Hop culture, spread worldwide reaching as far as the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, France, Russia, South Korea and many more. Breakin’ consists several parts, including but not limited to: Toprock, footwork, freezes, power moves, get downs and backrocks.
