RAD Vocational Syllabus Program, Intermediate Foundation to Advanced
12+ Years Old – Full Year Program – 1.25 Hour Class, Twice Per Week
The Vocational Graded Syllabus is the continuation of classical ballet training from the Academy’s Junior Graded Syllabus. However, it also stands alone as a full training regime, and is geared towards those engaging in the serious study of ballet. At the earliest level, pointe work is introduced for the first time, and each syllabus has been designed to give the necessary training to students wishing to study seriously, with a possible view to following a career in dance, or dance related subjects.
There are six levels of Vocational Graded Examinations starting with Intermediate Foundation and culminating in the Solo Seal Award. This latter award is the pinnacle of the Academy’s examination system. It takes the form of a performance before a panel of judges and invited audience. The Solo Seal examination candidates perform a series of solo variations, and success is regarded as an indication of the candidate’s potential to work as a professional dancer in the corps de ballet of a professional company.
Unlike Graded examinations, all Vocational level examinations must be taken in consecutive order. For students who take a minimum of two ballet classes per week, there is the opportunity to be selected by your instructor to take the associated RAD exam for each level, based entirely on teacher’s recommendation. We do not enter students who we believe would be unsuccessful with an examination. Examinations are not mandatory, but offer an exciting goal for many students and are an internationally recognized standard. Successful completion of examinations at any grade level is not a pre-requisite to progress forward with their class at North London Dance Centre. All teachers of these levels at North London Dance have professional and performing backgrounds, in addition to their Registered Teacher Status (RTS) with the Royal Academy of Dance. Generally speaking, North London Dance Centre students study the Senior Graded Syllabus and Vocational Syllabus on alternate years, to give the most well rounded ballet training.
