As the holidays near, dancers will begin to get excited about time away from school and the studio. Having some downtime is very important for all of us but it is also important that we keep moving! Dancers gain several benefits while working in class consistently throughout the year- flexibility improves, core strengthens, body awareness increases and technique will be perfected. Continuing to stay flexible and strong over the holidays ensures that these benefits aren’t lost and will help to prevent injury in the New Year!
- Keep moving!
You may get out of your normal daily routine during the holidays however, it is not a time to sleep 12 hours a day and spend your days in front of the TV. This is a great time to try new and different activities outside of dance and explore other movements! Skating, skiing, tobogganing are all great forms of cardiovascular activity that will help you stay fit for class!
- Create Goals
The New Year is a great time to create goals and work on your individual body needs. What one body needs is very different from another so, while you are away from the studio, work on what YOU need! Don’t have your front splits? Work on mobility and flexibility! Not in pointe shoes yet? Work on your core and calf strength. Create a daily 10-15 minute routine that will help get you closer to your dance goals!
- Watch a performance!
Take some time to watch some live dance (Nutcracker is my holiday favourite!) or dance videos on YouTube! You’ll be able to see some different choreography, view good technique and reignite your passion for dance! You’ll revive your passion for dance and look forward to getting back to class!
- Relative Rest
The holidays are a great time for relative rest and to let any little nagging injuries heal. Take care of any issues that have come up over the fall so that when it’s time to go back to your regular routine you’ll be ready to go!
